Input tokens vs. output tokens
Input tokens include prompts, system instructions, conversation history, documents, and tool definitions sent to the model. Output tokens are generated by the model. Providers usually charge different rates for each category.
How cached input can reduce cost
Prompt caching can reduce the cost of repeatedly sending the same instructions or context. Enable cached-input pricing and choose the estimated percentage of input tokens served from cache.
Ways to lower AI API expenses
Use smaller models for simple tasks, limit unnecessary context, cap output length, cache reusable prompts, batch non-urgent jobs, and route difficult requests to premium models only when needed.

How accurate is the estimate?
The arithmetic is exact for the rates displayed, but your actual bill may include tool calls, regional pricing, taxes, storage, media processing, or provider-specific fees.

It means the listed price applies to one million tokens. The calculator prorates that rate to your actual token usage.
